Exhibitions of learning are one of the most powerful ways to witness student growth, but they can be hard to imagine until you see one for yourself.

Exhibition of Learning

Exhibitions of Learning (also called Celebrations of Learning, Showcases of Learning or Demonstrations of Learning) are events where students share their learning and any products from a learning experience or project with a broad and public audience.

These events could take the form of a formal presentation (ex. play), an individual exhibition (ex. science fair) or a gallery walk of student tables (ex. showcase). Exhibitions typically include multiple students sharing their work on the same project or experiences.

Defense of Learning

A school or district-wide Defense of Learning (sometimes called Presentation of Learning, Showcase of Learning, Demonstration of Learning or Celebration of Learning) is a way for students, at designated milestones or grade levels, to share a body of evidence of learning and reflect on how they grew towards their own and school/district goals.

These events are designed for students to celebrate their strengths, identify their areas of growth, and next steps for learning. A committee of peers, teachers, family, experts, and/or community members provide feedback and determine if the student met learning outcomes.

The Key Difference

While Exhibitions typically include multiple students sharing their work on the same project or experiences to a broader public audience, Defenses focus on one learner at a time with a smaller panel, reflecting deeply on personal growth over multiple learning experiences.

Earned 3rd Prize in the Middle School Division of the C-SPAN StudentCam Documentary Competition for their film 'Endless Pursuit: Income Inequality vs. The Declaration of Independence.' Their documentary thoughtfully explores the connection between America's founding ideals and modern economic inequality, showcasing strong research, critical thinking, and communication. Their work highlights the impact of student voice in addressing complex national issues.

Dr. John J. Thornton

Director of Student Services

Dr. John J. Thornton is the Director of Student Services for Hampton Township School District, where he leads districtwide efforts in student support services and learner-centered innovation. He has guided the implementation of the district's Portrait of a Talbot framework and helped design the Exhibition of Learning, highlighting student voice and authentic demonstrations of learning.

Ari is a senior at Akiba Yavneh Academy where he has been a student for two years since moving from Toronto, Canada. He's interested in all things sports and will be attending Texas A&M for kinesiology after graduation.

Personalized Learning Coach

Laurie is the Personalized Learning Coach for Akiba Yavneh Academy Upper School in Dallas, Texas, where she works with teachers and leaders coaching and implementing student-centered programming. This year, she redesigned the Senior Summit, which was a culminating presentation that guided seniors in reflecting on their growth and demonstrated readiness for life beyond high school.

Finley & Levi

Student • 6th Grade

Finley came to CCDS in 5th grade and has been very involved with her projects, enjoying the choices and opportunities to go above and beyond. She is also a part of the Student Voice group, working to help build a better sense of belonging and wellness for her peers. Levi has been at CCDS since second grade. His teachers share that Levi is deeply curious and spreads his enthusiasm to others, including getting his whole family to read The Omnivore's Dilemma this spring.

Wendy Fairon

Wendy Fairon

Executive Director

Wendy Fairon is the Executive Director of Chico Country Day School, a public charter school for TK-8th grade students. She has been in education for over 20 years, teaching for 11 years first at elementary school and then as a middle school English teacher at Chico Country Day. In 2015 Wendy got her Masters degree in School Leadership from High Tech High in San Diego. She wrote a professional development grant for Project Based Learning that allowed CCDS teachers multiple visits to High Tech High. Since then, CCDS has had a PBL focus and strives to be a learner-centered space where students engage in meaningful work and create beautiful products to showcase their learning.
